USA Basketball Showcase Abu Dhabi 2024: Arena IT Case Study

How IP Care delivered enterprise-grade arena WiFi 6E, broadcast LAN, multi-rights-holder production support and NOC operations for the USA Basketball international showcase at Etihad Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, in October 2024.

Overview

The USA Basketball Showcase brought international-standard basketball to Etihad Arena on Yas Island in October 2024, a two-day event drawing global broadcast coverage, multi-rights-holder production crews and a full-capacity arena audience requiring dense, reliable connectivity across every zone.

IP Care was engaged to deliver the complete IT infrastructure layer: arena WiFi 6E for spectator and operational connectivity, broadcast LAN for rights-holder production, media-centre network for accredited press and broadcast partners, digital signage network, and NOC operations across both event days.

Connectivity at arena scale.

Etihad Arena is one of the largest indoor venues in the Middle East. Delivering reliable WiFi at basketball-event density, with thousands of concurrent users, multiple broadcast crews, and simultaneous digital signage and operations traffic, requires careful RF planning, channel separation and backhaul capacity that commodity event WiFi cannot provide.

IP Care deployed a WiFi 6E architecture across the arena bowl, concourse, media centre and operational zones. Access points were positioned for maximum coverage density with minimal co-channel interference, delivering consistent throughput to spectator devices, accredited media and production equipment simultaneously.

Broadcast LAN and multi-rights-holder production support.

International basketball events carry multiple broadcast rights across different regions and platforms. Each rights-holder operates independent production infrastructure (cameras, replay systems, commentary positions, graphics workstations), all requiring isolated, reliable network segments with guaranteed bandwidth.

IP Care designed and delivered the broadcast LAN architecture supporting all rights-holder positions at Etihad Arena, with segmented VLANs per production team, QoS policy enforcing broadcast traffic priority, and dedicated uplink capacity for each rights-holder feed.

Media centre connectivity.

The accredited media centre at Etihad Arena served the international press corps covering the USA Basketball Showcase. IP Care delivered the media-centre network with high-density WiFi, wired positions for broadcast production desks, and the uplink infrastructure required for live editorial filing.

Digital signage network.

The arena digital signage network (scoreboards, wayfinding displays, sponsor screens and operational displays) was delivered as a separate managed network segment, isolated from spectator and broadcast traffic to prevent interference and ensure display reliability throughout both event days.

NOC operations.

IP Care staffed a Network Operations Centre on-site across both event days, providing real-time monitoring of all network segments, proactive fault identification and resolution, and liaison with the venue technical team and rights-holders throughout the event.

Live monitoring covered spectator WiFi utilisation, broadcast LAN throughput and latency, media-centre connectivity, digital signage uptime and WAN link performance, all visible from a single NOC dashboard.

Why this matters for future event clients.

The USA Basketball Showcase is a reference for IP Care's arena-scale event IT capability: multi-rights-holder broadcast support, spectator WiFi at full-capacity arena density, and NOC operations under live-event pressure. The same operating model applies to any international sports event at an arena-class venue in the UAE.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What WiFi standard did IP Care deploy at Etihad Arena?

WiFi 6E is the current generation of enterprise wireless, delivering higher throughput, lower latency and better performance at high device density than WiFi 6 or WiFi 5. At arena scale with thousands of concurrent users, WiFi 6E's use of the 6 GHz band reduces co-channel interference and improves per-device throughput significantly.

How does multi-rights-holder broadcast LAN work?

Each rights-holder, whether a regional broadcaster, global streaming platform or production company, operates independent production equipment requiring isolated network access. IP Care designs broadcast LANs with separate VLANs per rights-holder, QoS policy enforcing broadcast traffic priority over all other traffic, and dedicated uplink capacity for each feed. Rights-holders cannot see or interfere with each other's network segments.

What does the NOC monitor during a live event?

Spectator WiFi utilisation per zone, broadcast LAN throughput and latency per rights-holder segment, media-centre connectivity, digital signage uptime, WAN link performance and any fault or alert across all managed network segments. The NOC team is on-site, not remote, for the duration of the event, with direct access to all infrastructure for immediate physical response if required.

Can IP Care support international sports events at other UAE venues?

Yes. The operating model deployed for USA Basketball at Etihad Arena applies to any arena or stadium-class venue in the UAE. IP Care has delivered event IT at Etihad Arena, Zayed Sports City, Yas Island and other major Abu Dhabi venues. The RF survey, network design and NOC operations process is venue-specific but the capability is consistent.
